Scandinavian Simplicity is the foundation of this stunning small-apartment design by Fariz Mamedov of FM Interiors. Nestled at the base of the snow-capped Tian Shan mountains in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the apartment blends natural beauty, culture, and modern design. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of pristine forests and golf courses, turning the surrounding landscape into part of the living space itself.
Fariz explains, “This apartment sits in a quiet three-story residential complex with direct access to a forest park. The location offers fresh air, serene surroundings, and breathtaking mountain vistas.”
Unlike the grand Soviet-era architecture found throughout Almaty, this space embraces a fusion of Parisian elegance, Scandinavian minimalism, and Kazakh hospitality. The result is a home that feels both worldly and deeply personal. “I wanted the apartment to reflect Parisian chic, Scandinavian restraint, and a sense of continuity across generations,” says Fariz.
The Property

The apartment is part of a small 2021-built complex near First President Park. The gated property is surrounded by manicured gardens, fountains, sculptures, and rooftop terraces. It feels like a miniature city within the natural landscape, perfectly merging outdoor beauty with modern comforts.

“The facade mixes modern classical design with gilded details, wrought iron balconies, brass and marble interiors, natural wood, and stone elements,” Fariz notes. “The balance of functionality and beauty is intentional. High windows and medium ceilings let the landscape become part of the interior.”
When the clients first entered the raw, wall-less space, they were met with a blank canvas. Fariz recalls, “I envisioned morning fog at the kitchen island, cozy evenings by the fireplace, and moments of quiet reflection with a book or glass of wine.” The large windows and scenic surroundings provided constant inspiration.

The layout mixes open-plan and traditional elements. Glass partitions separate the kitchen from the living room without breaking the flow, adding elegance and flexibility. Decorative windows between dining and living spaces enhance charm and Parisian flair.
Bedrooms and Functional Spaces

The master suite features a private bathroom and a wardrobe. A secondary room serves as a creative lounge, reading space, or guest room. Every corner of the apartment is tailored to the clients’ lifestyle, combining function with personal expression.

Designed for a couple whose children live abroad, the apartment prioritizes intimate, relaxing spaces for quiet evenings and weekend retreats. Fariz explains, “This space is meant for short stays, holidays, and breaks from the routine, so we had the freedom to experiment with color, texture, and layout.”
Inspiration and Color

Paris was a major influence. Fariz recalls photographing facades, doors, and moldings during his trip. Deep blue doors inspired baseboards and moldings, setting rhythm and mood. A Spanish painting of skiers became the color palette guide, introducing reds, yellows, lilacs, and ochres. Bedrooms feature soft, powdery tones, while secondary living areas highlight sky blue and ginger-lemon.

The combination of Parisian elegance, Scandinavian minimalism, and personal hobbies created a multi-layered, vibrant interior. Furniture from Europe, Scandinavia, and local designers, along with inherited family pieces, adds individuality and richness to the home.
Materials and Finishes

Natural and sustainable materials reinforce warmth and authenticity. Canadian oak parquet floors, marble and quartz in key areas, Spanish tiles, and French fabrics—linen, silk, wool, boucle, plush, and tweed—add comfort, tactile pleasure, and visual interest. Even the fireplace was custom-built with veined marble for a simple yet impactful statement.
The Result

In just over three months, Fariz developed layouts, sketches, and mood boards that evolved alongside construction. Challenges, like designing a biofuel fireplace without a chimney, were overcome with creativity and collaboration.
Ultimately, Scandinavian Simplicity allowed for a minimalist foundation while layering vibrant color, texture, and personalized elements. The result is a tiny apartment that feels spacious, welcoming, and full of life—a true reflection of the clients’ lifestyle, travels, and tastes.
